AI Ethics & Bias

Plain English: AI doesn’t have opinions or prejudices — but it produces outputs shaped by the biases in its training data. If you don’t know where to look for bias, you won’t spot it. And if you don’t spot it, you’ll pass it along.

AI models learn from text written by humans. Humans have biases. This means every AI model has absorbed patterns that reflect unequal representation, cultural assumptions, and historical prejudice — not because anyone programmed it in, but because it was in the data.

This shows up in concrete ways:

  • Hiring and evaluation. Ask AI to write a job description for a “strong leader” and you’ll often get language that skews toward traditionally masculine traits. Ask it to evaluate resumes and it may subtly favour certain names, universities, or backgrounds — because those patterns exist in the professional writing it trained on.

  • Cultural defaults. Ask AI to “describe a typical family” and it will often default to Western, English-speaking norms. Ask it to explain a holiday tradition and it’ll likely describe Christmas before Diwali. The model isn’t being malicious — it’s reflecting what appeared most frequently in its training data.

  • Language and representation. AI performs better in English than in most other languages because its training data is disproportionately English. It’s more accurate about well-documented topics (Silicon Valley, American politics) than about underrepresented communities and regions.

  • Stereotyping in creative output. Ask AI to write a story about a nurse and a doctor — notice who gets which role. Ask it to generate descriptions of people in different professions and watch for patterns in gender, age, and ethnicity. These aren’t random — they’re reflections of statistical patterns in published text.

This is the same problem described in Why AI Gets Things Wrong, applied to fairness instead of accuracy. AI produces biased output with the same polished, authoritative tone it uses for everything else. There’s no warning label. No hesitation. No asterisk.

When a human colleague says something biased, you can often detect it from tone, context, or knowing their perspective. When AI does it, the bias is embedded in fluent, professional-sounding text that looks like objective analysis. This makes it more dangerous in some ways — because it feels neutral when it isn’t.

Some bias is easy to spot — gendered pronouns, cultural assumptions, stereotypical descriptions. But the more consequential forms are subtler:

Framing bias. AI may present one perspective as the default and others as alternatives. Ask it to explain a policy debate and notice which side gets described as “mainstream” and which as “controversial.”

Omission bias. What the AI doesn’t mention can be as biased as what it does. Ask for a history of a technology and notice whose contributions are included and whose are left out.

Amplification bias. AI doesn’t just reflect existing biases — it can amplify them. If training data slightly favours one perspective, the model may produce output that strongly favours it, because the prediction mechanism gravitates toward dominant patterns.

You don’t need to audit training datasets or understand model architecture to work with bias responsibly. These are practical habits:

Ask for multiple perspectives. Instead of “What do people think about X?” try “What are three different cultural perspectives on X?” or “How would someone from [specific context] see this differently?” This pushes the model beyond its default framing.

Check who’s missing. When AI generates a list, a description, or an analysis, ask yourself: whose perspective isn’t represented here? What region, culture, or community might see this differently?

Be specific about your audience. “Write a health guide” will produce something generic and likely Western-centric. “Write a health guide for elderly adults in rural South Africa” forces the model to move beyond default assumptions.

Test for patterns. If you’re using AI for anything that affects people — hiring, evaluation, content creation, recommendations — run the same prompt with different names, genders, or contexts and compare the outputs. Differences reveal bias.

Don’t automate decisions about people without oversight. AI can help draft, summarise, and generate options. But decisions that affect people’s opportunities, wellbeing, or rights should always include human judgment. This is a core principle of the Ethical Prompting & Judgment pillar.

Bias in AI isn’t a problem that gets “fixed” with a software update. It’s a structural challenge that reflects the world the model learned from. As a generalist working with AI, your role isn’t to solve AI bias — it’s to be aware of it, watch for it in your own work, and make deliberate choices about when AI output needs human review.

This is one of the reasons AI fluency matters. The difference between someone who uses AI naively and someone who uses it fluently is often the ability to notice what the model got wrong — not factually, but ethically.
